"Have a pill, leave a pill. Need a pill, take a pill." should have been a sign above the water cooler in so many professional environments that I've been in. The number of pills changing hands around the workplace is downright hysterical--especially by people who will stare you in the eye and denounce drugs and their use with no hint of irony.

I'm not being judgy. I've done it too. For years. And I thought I was just helping out my friends and neighbors. And taking my own medicine.

I WAS WRONG.

I now play a brain game with myself called "Good Pill Bad Pill". The pills can be the exact same sort of pill but if I'm about to take 2 and I only need 1...then one of those pills is a good pill and one of them is a bad pill. See the difference?

I NEVER PUT A PILL IN MY FACE UNTIL I HAVE ASKED "IS THIS A GOOD PILL FOR ME RIGHT NOW OR A BAD PILL FOR ME RIGHT NOW?"

The answer is less about good or bad and more about whether or not I really need what I'm about to take or if I'm simply grabbing a pill from the cookie jar on my way past the water cooler.

When I'm mindful of what I'm taking, when I'm taking it and WHY I'm taking it, I can regain some measure of responsibility for my own well-being. When I was laying in bed for all of 2014 taking 200mg of fast acting Oxycodone, plus 20-40mg of long acting Oxycontin, plus 30mg of Valium, plus Diclofenac horse pills, plus Ibuprophen horse pills, plus Amrix muscle relaxers, plus Flexoril muscle relaxers, plus Xanaflex muscle relaxers EVERY SINGLE DAY as prescribed by my doctor...I was acutely aware as I wrote every pill down in my meds journal that one slight mistake could kill me.

Now that I am on NONE of that as a regular daily medication, why should I be any less mindful of what I'm taking into my body.

This principle can be true of vitamins, supplements and nutraceuticals! Especially true of this type of pill since they are unregulated and much of what is on the market is ground up lips and assholes of questionable origin and toxic heavy metal content...ON THE DANG HEALTHY SHELF AT THE PLACE WE BUY OUR HEALTH SHIT. How this is legal blows my mind.

I'M GOING TODAY TO GET ALL OF MY SUPPLEMENTS TESTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE IN FACT WHAT MY BODY NEEDS.

By a doctor. In a very scientific, modern clinic. No woo woo within a hundred years of what I'm doing. Loves me some woo woo but not mixed with my pill decisions.

I've been taking a ton of doctor prescribed, high grade, KNOWN source, US manufactured nutraceuticals as a core component of coming back to life. I'll share this in depth later but for now, just know that even the healthy building blocks of the body can be less than helpful if I am not doing my homework and putting in the energy to question why I'm taking what I'm taking.

SO HERE'S HOW TO BE A CONTESTANT ON "GOOD PILL BAD PILL."

  1. Stop what you're doing every time your impulse is to take a pill. Learn to put even just enough space to slide a piece of paper between your urge to take a pill and your action of taking a pill.
  2. Ask yourself "Is this a good pill or a bad pill?" or some derivation of that question that works for you. Begin to think about your pills of all varieties as additives to your brain and body chemistry and make sure you're not just following blind orders without taking responsibility for your own damn self and your healing today.
  3. If you don't feel that something is right or that your pills are pissed at each other and causing trouble in the lunch room then TALK TO A REAL EXPERT, read a serious blog or 3 (that's what I did), hop on the socials and join a fistbook group or something but GET EDUCATED and get the help you need to make sure your pills are bringing you in line with your overall health goals. (This implies you have health goals--even if they are "stop hurting like a bizatch" or "overcome arthritis and take up a casual sport 3x per week"...GET SOME!)

NOW WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR PILLS, you can do so with the mindful willingness to absorb whatever you need and eliminate the rest. This is not my opinion. This is science.

It's actually remarkable what thinking about what you're doing will do for you!

As I go to practice what I put out to you all today--I'm right beside you all the way.
